Dr. I. Gitas, an expert in Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing, has been an elected Fellow of the Cambridge Philosophical Society since 1995, a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Forest Fire Centre (EARSeL) since 2002, and Chairman of the EARSeL Forest Fire Special Interest Group since 2009.
He was also an advisor on forest fire prevention to the Forest Focus Regulation Review Committee (2005- 2006). His research has focused on the applications of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems in the management of the Natural Environment, particularly after fire. He has published more than 160 papers and a book together with Prof. Sillaeos entitled ‘Introduction to Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing’ and has participated as a scientific officer or researcher – collaborator in a number of European and National projects. His research has focused on the applications of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems in the management of the Natural Environment, especially after fire.
